Fairy Penguins are extremely social birds with their own kind, and will almost always hunt and move in groups.

They have the ability to communicate via particular sounds that are prominent during the breeding season when they call for their mating partners. The tiny penguins love to swim, and will head out after sunrise to hunt for food, and return in the evenings. Fairy Penguins are a major tourist attraction in some areas, notably Phillip Island in Victoria, where they feature penguin parades each evening to paying visitors.įairy Penguins are very small, only growing up to around 12 inches tall in their lifetime and they are distinguished by their typical bluish-grey hue and white underbelly. There are multiple species and they may known by different names such as Little Blue Penguins. These delightful little birds are found mostly in the southern parts of Australia and New Zealand. The smallest member of the family of Penguins is the Fairy Penguin. Once the tiny striped chicks hatch, it is the male who will care for them, rather than the female. The domestic life of Emus is rather unusual the female Emu lays a dozen or so very large green eggs, then proceeds to leave the male to incubate them on his own. Although they are not particularly social in the wild, they can be quite tame and friendly in zoos, where they are accustomed to being hand fed by visitors. These birds are rarely found in rainforest or very arid areas.
The main habitats of the Emu are forests and savanna woodlands. Their feet are made of three forward-facing toes and no hind toe. The head often is covered in scrappy black feathers and quite honestly give these interesting birds a comical appearance.Įmus cannot fly at all - they do have small wings but are grounded - however, their legs are long and extremely powerful, giving them the ability to run at around 50kmph (31 mph). The adult Emu sports a mass of shaggy grey-brown feathers on the body, although these feathers are not present on the neck, which is somewhat bald and bluish-black in color. Today we are going to take a look at some of the most notable and well known bird species this amazing country has to offer.Īustralia's largest native bird is the Emu, standing at a whopping height of between 1.6m-1.9m when standing tall. Australia is a beautiful continent, known for its huge variety of interesting and diverse native creatures.
